joppa, Edinburgh

joppa, Edinburgh

An old photograph of Joppa, Edinburgh, where I grew up. Little has changed. The road is the A1 fom Edinburgh to London. It is only a couple of hundred yards from the sea at this point. My earliest memory is standing on the left hand side of the road as a toddler and watching a lorry draw up when a dog rushed out and was run over, its head crushed under the wheels, feet from me. The butcher ran out and put the dog in a sack.
Later, I used to be a newspaper delivery boy in the area and then a delivery boy for the grocer, the shop with the awning next to the newsagents. I had 2 trade bikes at my disposal. The building in the distance was Joppa House, which was built by a retired sea captain and had a pagoda style tower. Now demolished, sadly.
