MacBook Air Core Shutdown - Thermal Paste Removal

NOTE: This is not a series of instructions. It is a reflection and observation of how I solved my own issues as I am a qualified technician.

I have been having odd behavior from my now 3 week old MacBook Air 1.6GHz 80Gb portable. I noticed that when I ran movies or used several applications at once including firefox playing youtube or veoh movies the temperature of the cpu cores would rise over 68 degrees Celsius and then the 2nd core would shut down while the 1st core would max out at 100% usage. All applications and video would then run really slow and choppy. I'd have to stop and let the unit cool down for the cores to function correctly.

Bad case of overheating. I use the unit on a flat table surface and on a laptop ventilated stand and the problem still persisted. It would happen after about 25-30 minutes of full screen video or web surfing. Using the laptop on my lap would result in earlier times, even as soon as 5 minutes. They're not really meant for laps any more :(

Onto the so-far-so-good working solution for my particular machine. Apple isn't renowned for applying the thermal paste to their cpu and heat dissipation assemblies with care, they tend to just dollop the stuff on and then squash it over the core between the silicone and the heat plate. This can allow for heaps of over spill and even for air pockets between the core and the heat plate which are bad, causing heat build-up with nowhere to go. As was the case with mine seen above.

Solution, cleaned all the apple applied thermal paste away with alcohol swabs and then applied a fine coating of Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste to the cpu and chipset cores as well as to the heat plate. Re-assembled and tested idle temps.

The Air idled around 54-58 degrees Celsius and now idles around 44 degrees. This was a surprising improvement and so far today no core shutdown!

Will keep an eye on it and stress test later today once the thermal paste has had time to settle (and I have the time).

Failing this I will be forced to use the CoolBook undervolting utility to reduce the amount of power feeding the cores, allowing them to run cooler.

I don't know what was with me this year. Every time I thought of taking a
picture on Thanksgiving I just wasn't feeling it. So here you go.
Curtains.

They were installed two days prior, but the installer used a steamer to get
out any wrinkles. We were told to leave them open for at least 24 hours so
the creases would set. We left them open for a couple days and Thanksgiving
was the first night that we closed them.

We had to get super thick thermal/blackout lining so our bedroom finally
retains some heat and so my husband (who works second shift) doesn't get
woken up at the crack of dawn by the light streaming through the slats in
the blinds. Now our room is pitch black when they're closed. They seem to
be doing the trick.

I don't think the picture does them justice.
