At 39 Rosenthaler strasse is a courtyard which includes a small museum, easy to miss, called otto Weidt's workshop for the blind. It is run by a group which remembers and celebrates those germans who despite unimaginably difficult challenges managed to resist the Nazi rule. The owner of the workshop was Otto Weidt, the place made brushes and brooms in Hackescher hof. The factory was a protected worksho since its products were destined for the German Army. In his factory, Otto Weidt employed between 1941 and 1943 approximately 30 blind and deaf Jews and other 8 illegal Jews. To keep his workers safe he bribed officials and got false documents and work permits for some refugees. To be able to buy more food he sold many of his brushes in the black market.
He went to extraordinary lengths to save his employees from deportation, even going to a camp to persuade the gestapo to release some who had been taken to Auschwitz. After the war he set up an orphanage for survivors and he has been recognised as one of the righteous among the nations at the holocaust museum in Yad Vashem, Israel. Otto Weidt died in 1947 in Berlin.
The Hackescher hofe is in the Scheunenviertel Quarter near to Alexander Platz, and was therefore in the communist DDR side of the Berlin Wall during the cold war period. It's a network of connecting courtyards built around the turn of the 20th century, which had workshops, apartments and clubs. It's located off Rosenthaler strasse and was a heavily Jewish populated area before the Nazi era.
